Abstract
Reasons for developing electronic reserves include the possibility of providing multiple and decentralised access and protecting the originals from loss and vandalism. Technical options include images or full text. Content options include in-house publications and commercial publications. A decision to include commercial publications raises intellectual property issues, including fair dealing and statutory licences. The issue of equitable remuneration for use of intellectual property in E-Reserve is discussed, including recent Australian developments. Pending the resolution of this issue Monash University Library has adopted an ‘interim solution’ and a formula for calculating a reasonable royalty. The experience at Monash is described in detail.
