ANDROGEN REPLACEMENT WITH ORAL TESTOSTERONE UNDECANOATE IN HYPOGONADAL MEN: A DOUBLE BLIND CONTROLLED STUDY

Abstract
The effects of androgen withdrawal and replacement were investigated in 6 hypergonadotropic and 6 hypogonadotropic men with hypogonadism. A double blind cross-over design was used comparing testosterone undecanoate (TU), 160 mg daily by mouth, with placebo. There was a significant effect of TU on all measures of sexual interest and behavior. Sexual interest increased within the 1st wk of TU administration, ejaculation usually returning within the second week. Behavioral responses were similar in the hyper- and hypogonadotropic groups. The rise in plasma testosterone during TU administration was modest, not reaching the normal range in several cases. 5.alpha.-dihydrotestosterone rose more substantially. There was a significant fall in sex hormone binding globulin, a rise in estradiol and no significant change in gonadotropin concentrations during TU administration.
