Abstract
In two lamb trials no significant differences in lamb response were observed when the hay (alfalfa and grass) in pellets containing 60 to 65% roughage was ground through hammer mill screens varying in size from 3/32 to ¼ inch or when made into pellets varying between ¼ and ½ inch in size. In a second experiment various levels of alfalfa hay (65–100%) in pellets did not significantly influence lamb response, although maximum gain occurred when 75 to 90% roughage was included in the ration. When lambs were graded under the revised U.S.D.A. standards the 100% hay pellet produced sufficient finish on heavy feeders so that all lambs graded choice.
