Abstract
There are substantial gender differences in self-esteem and in attach ment to school that appear to be associated with characteristics of schools. While there are also substantial gender differences with respect to physical and mental health, school-level variables are less important than individual or family variables, although adolescent relationships are significantly more important for the mental health of females than of males. Keywords
