(Second of Three Parts)Central Respiratory ControllerThe respiratory controller, located within the CNS, is composed of two functionally and anatomically separate elements. Voluntary respiration is governed primarily by the cortex, and automatic respiration by structures within the brain-stem. The spinal cord functions to integrate the output of these two subsystems.
