Winds from dwarf galaxies and Lα absorption features in quasar spectra

Abstract
Gas poor dwarf galaxies have necessarily evolved through a stage of extensive mass loss. If the mass shedding occurred because of a galactic wind, then the diffuse clouds of gas surrounding these dwarf galaxies could give rise to the numerous weak Lα absorption lines which are observed in the spectra of high redshift quasars. We present a model based on this idea which reproduces all the observed features of the Lα absorption lines. A significant fraction of the lines produced in this way would have profiles with two symmetric minima and a central hump. This distinctive feature should be observable.
