Abstract
We investigate here the threshold behaviour of Williams domains and of the dielectric alignment in homeotropic and parallel oriented nematic films for different signs and magnitudes of the dielectric anisotropy. The theoretical predictions of the Helfrich theory are in agreement with the experiment.Keywords
