Enumeration of the True Observables in Gauge-Invariant Theories

Abstract
By making use of invariance arguments, we shall show that the total number of true observables which can serve as "coordinates" in a gauge-invariant theory is where is the number of field variables and is the number of arbitrary functions needed to specify an element of the gauge group.
