Abstract
Animal and plant material is reviewed showing that some gene products are diffusible while others are not. Aberrant Tradescantia microspores have a deep constriction or cell wall making them "dumb-bell" shaped and separating the chromosomes into 2 groups of 3. Such microspores are approx. normal in total size but retain the protein granules characteristic of pre-prophase cells. Evidently growth-promoting gene products diffuse through cell walls but not those responsible for protein granule disintegration. Keywords
