Analysis of the Seasonal Mortality of the Cabbage Looper1 in North Carolina2

Abstract
Age-specific life tables were constructed for populations of cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), on collards. The rapid population buildup in the 3rd generation was due to low mortality of large larvae during the 2nd generation. The principle mortality agent affecting large larvae during the late generations was a nuclear polyhedrosis virus, although other factors, including the tachinid voria ruralis (Fallén), were involved. Field and laboratory experiments indicated that successful overwintering of the cabbage looper in interior North Carolina was improbable.
