Abstract
A new operative technic for the treatment of aural atresia is described which has been used in the last five patients with this anomaly treated surgically at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. All five patients attained serviceable hearing, and in two the hearing level is better than 20 db for the speech frequency range. The operation consists of creation of a tympanic membrane and construction of a functional sound-conducting system, with maintenance of the ossicular chain, even though deformed. The great majority of cases of aural atresia are suitable for surgical treatment. Aural embryology, pathology and pathophysiology are reviewed. Keywords
