Abstract
One of the current problems in compensating workers for loss of hearing due to exposure to excessive noise is the lack of a wholly satisfactory handicap evaluation procedure. In this paper the various schemes currently in use are described; these include formulae to calculate percentage handicap from a pure-tone audiogram and the more subjective methods used in civil court proceedings. Discussion with lawyers engaged in litigation in this area has shown a desire for some system by which claimants can be classified into groups, each group being associated with a clear description of the extent of the handicap involved. A grouping scheme of this type, which has been developed over some years experience in this field, is put forward.
