Nursing Bottle Caries

Abstract
Feeding habits affect dental health and ultimately the total health of young children. There is mounting concern among pediatric dentists about the increased incidence of nursing bottle caries in patients younger than 3 years old. Nursing bottle caries, nursing bottle syndrome, or bottle-propping caries are synonymous terms for a devastating condition that may render young children dental cripples. Typically, the primary maxillary incisors are affected most severely. The primary first molars are second in frequency; the most remarkable finding is that the mandibular incisors are seldom involved (Fig. 1 and 2). This is thought to be related to the protective effect of the tongue during suckling.
