Priapism Related to Phenelzine Therapy

Abstract
To the Editor: Tricyclic and monoamine oxidase–inhibitor antidepressants can produce sexual dysfunction,1 but unlike the situation with phenothiazines,2 trazodone is the only antidepressant that is known to produce priapism.3 We describe a patient in whom priapism developed during therapy with phenelzine, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.The patient was a 36-year-old married man with a diagnosis (according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition)4 of agoraphobia with panic attacks.
