Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the role of philosophy in the quest for ethical foundations. It does so by examining some obstacles to ethical inquiry, i.e., the trends of technicism and relativism; second, by presenting six basic types of ethical inquiry with their strengths and weaknesses; and third, by sketching some of the contemporary trends in ethical inquiry. Keywords
