Abstract
Contemporary studies of the Weberian thesis are found wanting through their vulgarization of the concept of rationality in the Western world. A comparison of Catholics and Calvinists, using Seeman's Personal Powerlessness Scale as a measure of rational control, shows differences opposite from those suggested by the Protestant Ethic; possible explanations of this finding are discussed. Keywords
