Abstract
To the Editor. —Most physicians who manage patients with uveal melanoma screen for the development of metastasis with serum liver enzymes.1,2If results of these studies are See also pp 796 and 799. abnormal, they usually proceed with a liver scan. Herein, we describe a case of diffuse liver metastasis from uveal melanoma in a patient with concurrent normal serum liver enzyme levels and liver scan. Report of a Case. —A 49-year-old woman was referred to the Oncology Service of Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, in July 1983 for management of a posterior choroidal melanoma in her right eye. Serum liver enzyme levels, including lactic dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and glutamyl transpeptidase, were within normal limits (Table). The patient was treated with the application of a cobalt plaque designed to deliver 8,500 rad to the apex and 40,000 rad to the base of the tumor.
