Reproductive Capacity of Beef Bulls. IV. Changes in Sexual Behavior and Semen Characteristics among Successive Ejaculations

Abstract
The increasing use of artificial insemination with beef cattle has created a greater demand for semen from superior progeny tested sires. Sexual preparation prior to ejaculation and high ejaculation frequencies increase the sperm output of dairy bulls (Hale and Almquist, 1960). Hupp et al. (1962) and Almquist and Cunningham (1967) have shown that increased eJaculation frequency greatly increases weekly sperm output of beef bulls. However, the effects of sexual preparation on sperm output and semen characteristics of ejaculates from beef bulls have not been investigated. These studies were designed (a) to determine the effect of sexual preparation on the changes in semen characteristics, sperm output and sexual activity of beef bulls associated with successive ejaculations and (b) to compare the practicability of using the electroejaculator and the artificial vagina (AV) as methods for collecting successive ejaculates. Information on sperm freezability and fertility has been presented by Martig, Almquist and Foster (1969).
