Self-Poisoning by Sodium Chlorate-Some Unusual Features

Abstract
Following ingestion of an estimated 20 g of sodium chlorate, a 29 yr old Asian man exhibited abdominal pain, vomiting, cyanosis and methemoglobinemia. Basic staining material was seen in the cytoplasm of the peripheral monocytes and mature neutrophils, probably representing phagocytosed effete damaged red cells which were subsequently digested. Management by renal dialysis provied supportive treatment. Diagnosis of usually fatal sodium chlorate self-poisoning is discussed.
