Abstract
There are two ways which can be used to estimate annual actual evapotranspiration, one being an indirect estimation method using the water balance of a catchment, the other being the use of evaporation pan data or climatic data. The method in this paper belongs to the second type. A mathematical model for estimating actual evapotranspiration is formulated and its parameter estimation methods are described. The latter include the use of pan data or climatic data, and the selection depends on the availability of data. The acceptable accuracy of the model presented in the paper is demonstrated. The model can be applied to various areas in China where there is comparable terrain and range of forest cover. The model is particularly useful for estimating water losses from ungauged catchments.
