Electron Microscope Studies of Lichen Reproductive Structures in Physcia aipolia

Abstract
A modified technique involving hydration of the thalli and longer soaking times for the sections has given greater reliability in the embedding and sectioning of lichen ascocarps for electron microscope study. It was possible to observe stages in the development of the asci from the ascogenous hyphal stage through to the mature ascus, and the development of ascospores from their initiation through their germination. The reproductive structures of Physcia aipolia (Ehrh.) Hampe, as revealed in this study, develop much like those known for non-lichenized Discomy cetes. No fungal haustoria were observed in the algal cells of the ascocarp. A nucleus caught in a hyphal pore in the ascogenous hyphae is pictured.
