Why Mitterrand won: The French presidential elections of April‐May 1981∗

Abstract
When examining the reasons for the result of the April‐May 1981 French Presidential election account must be taken both of long‐term social and political trends and short‐term factors such as the impact of the economic conjoncture and the campaign. The personalities, policies, political strategies and tactics of the two major candidates as well as those of their allies must also be examined to explain the disaffection of certain groups with the incumbent President and to show the emergence of political conditions which facilitated their rallying to François Mitterrand, his principal—and victorious—adversary.
