Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Thyroid Gland: A Report of Four Cases

Abstract
Four cases of pure squamous cell carcinoma were found among 130 consecutive malignant tumors of the thyroid gland accessioned in the surgical pathology files in the past 10 years. The clinicopathologic data from the four cases are reported and the literature is reviewed briefly. It is suggested that squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid, although uncommon, may occur after squamous metaplasia of the follicular epithelium. The tumor occurs most frequently in older persons who have long histories of goiter or other chronic thyroid diseases. Morphologically, squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid is similar to that seen in other organs. The tumor is radioresistant and highly malignant.
