Abstract
The authors report their observations on 154 newborns of diabetic mothers from 1958 to 1973. The total neonatal mortality is 14.28%. In fact, in a first period from 1958 to January 1971 the mortality was 19.23% and from January 1971 to January 1973 it was only 4%. The improvement was caused by the prolongation of the pregnancy (average duration 36 weeks in the first period, 37 in the second), decreasing the number of hyaline membranes. The authors study the dangers confronting this newborn; they stress the importance of hypoglycaemia observed in 89 cases. They prove that this hypoglycaemia is in correlation with an hyperinsulinism of the newborn, observed even taking into account the presence of anti-insulin antibodies checked in the patients. The authors also study the future of these infants: 97 infants of more than 2 years of age have been reviewed on one or more occasions; only one of them became diabetic. Keywords
