Abstract
Considerable research has been carried out in recent years into the use of liquid crystals in producing non-emissive displays with low power consumptions (about 1 μW cm-2 of active area) and which can be read even in direct sunlight. The nematic and cholesteric liquid crystals used in such displays are liquids having long range orientational molecular ordering (see, for example, the January 1977 issue of Physics Bulletin p28).
