THE EFFECT AND RATE OF REMOVAL OF PYRUVIC ACID ADMINISTERED TO NORMAL PERSONS AND TO PATIENTS WITH AND WITHOUT "VITAMIN B DEFICIENCY"

Abstract
Intraven. adm. of 100 ml. of 5% sodium pyruvate had no effect on normal subjects or patients without vit. deficiency or on most of those with vit. deficiency; but some showed a tendency to more prolonged elevation of blood bisulphite binding substance (B.B.S.). Oral adm. of 100 ml. of 5% sodium pyruvate showed no difference; however 250 ml of 10% showed cathartic effect with some evidence of ketosis. Sodium pyruvate is non-toxic for man but tends to cause transient alkalosis. Certain ketone bodies arising from metabolism of pyruvate may bind bisulphite and contribute to the high values.
