Abstract
The preferred path for a diffusion‐controlled reaction depends, in general, upon global properties of the potential surface and the frictional resistance to motion upon this surface. A variational formula for this path is derived. The corresponding Euler–Lagrange equations are examined for two important special cases. Keywords
