An attempt was made to determine whether spongine (isolated from commercial West Indies sponges) contains other halogenated amino acids besides diiodotyrosine and dibromotyrosine. Evidence was presented to show that tyrosine-bouhd halogens could not account for the total halogen content of spongine. No evidence could be found for the presence of halogenated tryptophane and histidine in spongine. A complete elementary analysis of spongine was made: C 47.00%; H 6.28%; N 16.08%; I 1.41%; Br 2.93%; S 0.87%; Ash 1.16%; Cl 0. The iodine and bromine content of a number of tropical and subtropical sponges from West Indies waters are given.
