Abstract
Since the advent of endoscopic hernia repair 10 years ago, the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) and the total extraperitoneal (TEP) technique are established. Data of a study on TAPP repair are analyzed to evaluate the efficiency and complications of the method. Since 1993 the TAPP technique was used in almost all inguinal hernia repairs. Therefore, a complete evaluation of the method is possible. Follow-up was done by means of a documentation team with a computerized database. During an 80-month period, 5,707 TAPP repairs were performed (15.1% recurrent hernia repairs). The median operation time was 45 min, with an overall morbidity of 2.0%. The postoperative recurrence rate was 0.6–1.2%. TAPP repair is effective in inguinal hernia surgery on an unselected group of patients and suitable for trainees. As a possible disadvantage of the technique, the need for general anesthesia may be taken, whereby there is again an advantage in respect of avoiding recurrences in the long-term follow-up.Keywords
