Abstract
We adopt a simplified kinetic scheme to account for the functional dependence of the observed, rapid dissociation of I2 in the presence of O2(1Δ). Phenomenologically, the functional form for I2 disappearance was found to be d[I2]/dt=−[(6±4)×10−29 cm6 s−1][I2][O2(1Δ)]2 for O2(1Δ) concentrations greater than 25 mTorr. Moreover, analysis of our data indicates that three O2(1Δ) molecules are expended in producing two iodine atoms. Keywords
