Abstract
A self-contained bottom sampler is described with which two divers can obtain quantitative samples of the macrofauna living in soft substrates on the sea-bed. The essential parts are a sampling cylinder and an air-lift pump. It has been used in depths of 1–33 m, thus enabling the low-tide region to be sampled at the time of mid-tide in calm water and samples of the fauna from the sediment surface to a depth of 60 cm below it have been obtained. It is also possible to sample various levels within the substrate. Keywords
