Abstract
The shear moduli of uniaxially oriented low-density polyethylene sheets have been accurately measured. The experiment involved a critical examination of the validity of the St. Venant theory for torsion of prisms and the Biot correction for axial tension. The final values of shear compliances obtained were shown to be consistent with those previously obtained from measurements of extensional compliances and Poisson's ratios. The time dependence and the anisotropy of the strain dependence of the compliances is discussed. Keywords
