Abstract
Detailed derivations of the expressions describing the Senftleben‐Beenakker effects in collinear static and alternating magnetic fields are given. In addition, an expression for the thermomagnetic torque in rarefied polyatomic gases is derived. Numerical calculations have been made for the torque phenomenon in nitric oxide under various conditions and the results compared with experiment. In particular, a value of has been found for the effective g factor for NO, to be compared with values of obtained from Senftleben data and obtained from molecular beam magnetic resonance data.
