Abstract
Sporotrichosis is very common in Colombia. There are probably several thousand victims throughout the country. At the dermatologic clinic of the University of Colombia and in Acneform lesions, a type often seen in Colombia. private practice a patient is seen almost every week. The lesions are always on the skin and subcutaneous tissue. The diagnosis is easily made by culturing Sporotrichum schenckii in Sabouraud's medium. The causative organism of sporotrichosis lives in a saprophytic stage on vegetables and animals. It is found in vegetables used as food and many other plants in the woods, gardens, prairies, etc. One common method of contagion is through handling the straw used in packing fragile objects. In this instance the condition is an occupational disease. It is not unusual to see a series of patients who contracted the disease by handling contaminated straw from the same packing company.
