Abstract
To evaluate Hawaii's geriatric foster family care program, 40 matched pairs of patients discharged from the acute care facility into foster family and nursing homes were compared on physical function skills, well-being, and cost of care 6 months after placement. Foster family patients showed more improvement in well-being and mobility and equal improvement in activities of daily living (ADL) skills. The cost of foster family care was 61% that of nursing home care. These results encourage public support of foster family placement as an alternative to nursing home care. Keywords
