Abstract
Reliability analysis correlates the statistical aspects of load analysis, stress analysis, and strength analysis in their effects on the probability of survival of a structure under the operating conditions anticipated during its specified design life. Since stress analysis, by its very nature, can deal only with idealized structures constructed of idealized materials, it is the strength analysis that has to introduce the physical reality in the form of the significant structural and material parameters and their statistical variation. The paper discusses the effect of the structurally significant material properties on the reliability of aircraft structures with respect to unserviceability, ultimate load failure, and fatigue, with particular emphasis on the relative importance of stochastic concepts in strength analysis and load analysis. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
