Abstract
In this first of a new series of articles on acute and chronic pancreatitis, a rational approach to the management of acute disease is outlined. Because it is often difficult to judge its severity from the initial symptoms, the ability to identify patients who are at risk of major complications and death is critical. Five risk factors can be identified at the time of admission. Keywords
