Abstract
The pigment epithelium in the eye of the pickerel Esox contains a red pigment. It is localized in tiny cylinders and granules, and it replaces melanin. From its characteristics (solubility, chromotography, ultraviolet–visible spectrum) it appears identical with retinal red pigment of characins and wrasses. A method of extraction is described.
