Determination of Total and Combined Sulfur in Butyl Rubber

Abstract
Methylethyl ketone has been shown to be a much more effective solvent than acetone for the removal of extractable sulfur and certain accelerators from Butyl rubber vulcanizates in a standard Soxhlet extraction. The use of this extraction agent, together with combustion of the original and extracted samples in the Braun-Shell sulfur apparatus, provides a satisfactory procedure for determining the amounts of total and combined sulfur in Butyl compositions.
