Legionnaires disease in Reading—possible association with a cooling tower

Abstract
A total of 16 cases of legionnaires disease occurred in Reading between November 1983 and February 1984. Eleven cases became ill between 15 and 19 December 1983. Interviews with these cases failed to locate any particular building as the source of the infection. A case control study suggested that one locality of the town centre was the source of infection. L. pneumophila, serogroup I was isolated from an air conditioning cooling tower in this locality. The weather conditions at the time of the infection were reviewed.
