Abstract
(First of Three Parts)Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a protein that is necessary for the growth and maintenance of sympathetic and certain sensory neurons. A number of recent studies have implicated NGF in several disorders of the human nervous system. This article reviews these studies after first considering the body of information that pertains to the effect of NGF on its target cells in animals. The discovery of NGF followed from a general investigation of the influence that peripheral end organs have on their associated nerve centers. To provide a relatively homogeneous periphery, Bueker1 implanted mouse sarcoma 180 into . . .This publication has 46 references indexed in Scilit:
