Abstract
Parsnip seed were selected because of their short vitality, tolerance to extreme drying, and rapid germination over considerable range of temp. All germination tests of the 8500 seed used were made in lots of 100 each in automatic electric ovens. Fresh seed, either fully ripe or partly green, germinate equally well at constant or alternating temp. between 15 and 27[degree] C. The germination of green seed was improved 16.6% by drying in a vacuum oven at 60[degree] C. for 4 days. Seed were stored under the following conditions: air-dry in paper bags at room temp. and in ice chest; air-dry in tightly stoppered bottles at 25 and 5[degree] C.; and artificially dried in vacuo or in air in sealed bottles at 25 and 5[degree] C. After 3 yrs. unfavorably stored seed required alternating temp. (15-25[degree] C.) for germination, favorably stored an optimum of 15[degree] C. Ice chest storage is superior to room temp. in spite of increased water content. Seed not artificially dried lose vitality rapidly when stored without air. Seed dried artificially pelow critical moisture content of 6.13% and stored in air-tight containers at low temp. should show optimum keeping quality.
