Time of Cessation of Intrauterine Migration of Pig Embryos

Abstract
Both uterine horns were ligated midway between the body and the tip of the horn in 70 gilts 4 days after mating. When the ligatures were removed at day 8, 9, 10 or 11 after mating, pregnancy was maintained and embryos migrated throughout the uterus. When the ligatures were removed at day 12 fewer gilts were pregnant and fewer embryos had migrated beyond the site of the ligature. Gilts whose ligatures were either removed at day 13 or were not removed did not remain pregnant except when PMS was injected at day 8 or 9 and HCG on day 11 or 12 to induce new ovulations. Embryos can apparently migrate throughout the uterus up to day 12 but must be at the site where they will implant before day 13 in order to survive. Copyright © 1970.
