Abstract
The continued support for over 30 years of research in viral hepatitis by the United States Army Medical Research and Development Command seems about to pay off. This is becoming apparent to other agencies that are now jumping on the band wagon and supporting research in this area. Perhaps those in control of federal budgets might learn from this example of the necessity of sustained support; if the present abrupt curtailment of training and research funds for the biomedical sciences is not reversed, the consequences will be unconscionable delays in solving problems affecting human health.
