Abstract
On 80 albino rats, 1-2 mos. old, anastomoses were performed between nerves that contrasted markedly in their myelin content (a) phrenic nerve (central)[long dash]cranial laryngeal (peripheral) ; (b) cervical sympathetic (central)[long dash]cranial laryngeal nerve (peripheral). After 10-180 days myelin sheaths, fixed by Schultze''s osmium method, were counted and measured by projection or micrometer. Axons were examined after silver impregnation (Bodian). Controls: 92 animals. The degree of myelination depends almost exclusively on the ingrowing axon, but its upper limit seems to be set by the Schwann plasmodium.Keywords
