In Vitro and in Vivo Activity of Synthetic Detergents against Influenza a Virus

Abstract
Summary: Twenty compounds, including 18 cationic, anionic, and un-ionized detergents and two commercial compounds were tested for their activity against influenza A virus. Seven of the detergents and hexylresorcinol were found to be active in vitro in high dilution against influenza virus. However, none of the compounds when administered intranasally by instillation or spray protected mice against infection with influenza A virus. Immune serum against influenza A virus was the only agent found which effectively protected mice against infection.
