Abstract
In Ontario several species of polyphagous arthropods consumed nymphs and apterous adults of the green apple aphid,Aphis pomiDeGeer, as determined by serological assays and feeding trials. The most abundant predators on apple tree foliage were the reduviidAcholla multispinosaL., the miridCampylomma verbasci(Meyer), the coccinellidsCoccinella septempunctataL. andAdalia bipunctataL., and coccinellid and chrysopid larvae. An efficacy index developed to assess the effectiveness of foliage-inhabiting predators indicated that those with the greatest potential wereChrysopalarvae and adultC.septempunctatain 1987, and adultC.septempunctataandC.verbasciin 1988. The earwig,Forficula auriculariaL., showed potential as a predator ofA.pomiin 1989. Of the epigeal arthropods tested, the carabidsAmara aeneaDeGeer,Bembidion quadrimaculatum oppositumL., andHarpalus aeneusF., and the antsFormica fuscagroup,Myrmica ameryanaForel, andM.monticolaWheeler were the most active feeders onA.pomi.
