Abstract
We investigated the caecal contribution to the energy budget of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) through feeding and metabolic studies of intact and caecectomized birds. The feeding trials indicated that, under the conditions described, the caeca contributed 5.7% of the mean daily energy requirements of the quail. Comparisons of metabolic rates of intact and caecectomized birds under cold stress failed to show any significant differences, suggesting that the thermogenic contribution of the caeca to the energy budget is negligible. Keywords
