Spatial Evolution of Velocity-Modulated Ion Beams in a Plasma

Abstract
Spatial growth and damping of a velocity-modulated ion beam are observed in a machine where no ion-ion instability is predicted. The phenomena are well explained by linear "wave" theory for beam bunching.
