THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC ACTION OF PENICILLIN

Abstract
Impure penicillin possesses greater chemotherapeutic action than crystalline penicillin G against certain exptl. infections. The present report includes data that suggest that, under certain exptl. conditions certain of the degradation products of penicillin are capable of enhancing slightly the action of crystalline penicillin G and of highly purified penicillin dihydro-F. Although insufficient data are available at present, it seems possible that the combined action of the various forms of penicillin with their degradation products may be responsible for the greater chemotherapeutic effectiveness of amorphous penicillin, in contrast to crystalline penicillin G. A no. of substances other than the penicillin degradation products enhance penicillin. It is conceivable that all of these are contaminated with trace amounts of an unidentified substance and that none is in itself, responsible for the enhancement effect.
